The L.C. of Katerini in TPM for the Erasmus+ IMPACT project

The LC of Katerini at the Transnational Meeting (TPM) for the European Erasmus+ IMPACT program (Increasing Migration and climate change Public Awareness through Collaboration and Teaching – impact-erasmus.eu)

The Laboratory Center of Katerini participated in the first transnational working meeting (TPM), in Osimo, Italy, in the framework of the Erasmus+ IMPACT program (a program concerning climate change and migration). On the first day of the meeting, the Greek delegation consisting of the Director of the Laboratory Center of Katerini and two teachers received excellent hospitality from the Director of the host school unit, Angelo Frisoli of the “Istituto di Istruzione Superiore M.Laeng”. The Director, after welcoming the participants, spoke about the characteristics and goals of the school, the specialties operating in it and the laboratories with which it is equipped. He also mentioned that in the afternoon hours, immigrant students have the opportunity to attend courses adapted to their needs, Italian language courses as well as specializations.

Then, Ms. Silvia Toresi, English teacher of the school unit, spoke about the work of the NGO “CARITAS” and the cooperation that exists with the school unit. She referred to the role of this specific organization and its absolute connection with the Catholic Church. She also referred to its purpose, which is the creation, implementation and realization of actions and programs of humanitarian and charitable content, as well as the development of the spirit of solidarity within society. In addition, through a video presentation, the school’s effort to cooperate with the social cooperative “CARITAS” was presented.

Then, Ms. Donatella Linguiti, representative of the NGO AMAD, presented the Associazione Multietnica Antirazzista Donne that operates in Ancona and referred to the way it operates, the needs it tries to cover as well as the way it tries to support immigrants so that they can achieve as smooth an integration in Italy as possible.

The visit to the school concluded with a speech by a Bangladeshi immigrant, who attends classes at the school in the afternoons. He referred to his personal experience and the path he followed until he reached Italy from Bangladesh (Lebanon – Greece – Romania and finally Italy). He referred to the problems he faced in the years that passed until he arrived in the country but also to the satisfaction and joy he now experiences, being a student of the school, now speaking the Italian language that he was taught. His emotion and the positive feelings he had to express regarding the treatment and support he received from the school were evident.

A video was then shown about the use of the equipment of the mechanical engineering laboratory by immigrant students of the school, as well as the sewing-fashion laboratory that operates at the school.

Then a tour of the school premises took place. Initially in a computer lab where students of the mechanical engineering department were taught how to design electronic - 3D designs using the Autodesk inventor program. The teacher of the course showed various models that they have printed with the school's 3D printers, a model, as well as a bust of Bocelli, which they managed to print using a laser scanner and a 3D printer, using special powder and glue for its construction. He also presented constructions made with materials that are compressed in molds made in the mechanical laboratory.

This was followed by a tour of the mechanical laboratory where the equipment used by students in the mechanical field was presented, such as lathes, milling machines, etc. The laboratory is equipped with various modern machines such as CNC, a special milling machine for making molds and a CNC lathe for making components, a laser for engraving on materials such as plastic and wood. A demonstration of the use of the machines was carried out by the laboratory teacher and reference was made to work carried out with students related to automation, such as with an automatic color-based sorting machine.

After the lunch break, a visit was made to the premises of the organization “CARITAS”. The representative of the organization presented the actions implemented at the center and the possibility of hosting immigrant families. Finally, a visit was made to the facilities of the organization AMAD (Associazione Multietnica Antirazzista Donne), which supports immigrant women as well as women who are abused. In addition to psychological support, the beneficiaries of the center can receive help with food and support in employment matters.

On the second day of work, a visit was made to the branch of the school unit, the “I.T.I.S. Liceo Science Applicate” in Castelfidardo. A visit was made to the electronics laboratory, where students, together with their teachers, implement simulations of various processes using various machines. Next to this space, students of the school had taken over the operation of an online radio station. This was followed by a visit to the biology laboratory, where, among other experiments, they use hydroponics techniques to cultivate plants, taking advantage of equipment that has been set up in the laboratory area and outside the school. In a specially designed chamber, equipped with sockets for cultivating plants, there is an automatic watering system connected to computer control systems for various parameters, while a meteorological station is installed outside the greenhouse.

The working group then gathered in the conference room of the school unit, where the educational visits that took place were discussed, as well as the impact that they may have on the program. This was followed by a long discussion (morning and afternoon) regarding the program deliverables (publication and toolkit) that need to be developed, an analysis of questionnaires implemented in the school units regarding student awareness regarding climate change and the influence it may have on migration. An attempt was made to provide solutions to problems that have arisen during the course of the program, resulting in the rescheduling of specific activities but in-person meetings. A presentation and briefing (by the Greek team) was also held regarding the dissemination of the program results on the internet and social media, as well as the strategy that must be followed by the consortium, in order to achieve the program's objectives. Finally, the partners renewed their appointment with a scheduled online meeting for November 2024.
